failwhale
Regular Twitter users will be familiar with the image of a smiling whale being lifted out of the ocean by a flock of birds; it appears when the hugely popular social media service crashes due to overloading.

Check out this article on how this now iconic image (it even has its own fan club) dubbed the ‘Fail Whale’ has changed the life of its young designer. Yiying Lu, a university graduate from Sydney, says it was “kind of a kismet thing” that her career is now associated with a failure page.

“I think it’s nice to see that people connected with the image. Rather than having an HTML page saying: ‘This page cannot be found,’ you actually make it interesting and make people think about it and people actually realise there’s an alternative way of taking failure.” – Yiying Lu
