In this competitive environment it’s good to look at what graduates in other parts of the world are doing; where are their preferences to work. Then to question why that is and what similar opportunities exist for you in New Zealand. The GuardianUK 300 is the biggest ever survey of UK employers and what students want from their graduate careers and the research is worth a look as part of your career planning.

Men show a bias towards science and IT, women the public sector. Technology firms like Apple and IBM make the top 10 for men but not even the top 20 for women. How do the results stack up with what you want from a graduate career?

I have to say, I was keen on the Secret Intelligence Service, was selected to take the exams, didn’t get in and revised my plan, ending up on great sales and marketing graduate training scheme. What you want isn’t always what you get but putting in time to research the options and trying is always a good thing!
