At the 2010 NZ Computer Science Research Student Conference (NZCSRSC), numerous leading ICT experts have participated in a series of exciting Keynote and Tech Talks presentations.

One keynote speaker, Nat Torkington, a Vic Alumni, talked about the “Careers Spotters Field Guide”. He highlighted the importance of finding and getting into the right career path and organisation.

His advice included:

  • Find something and somewhere interesting to work with
  • Don’t be overwhelmed or wowed by freebies such as office perks, kitchen/shower facilities, gym memberships etc. They are there to keep you in the office!
  • Hang out with the ‘civilian’ species
  • Address these questions before jumping into a conclusion: Shall I join the  industry? How can I be useful? How much power do I want to have in my job? Will I be happy with a 9 – 5 job?
