The dog ate my homework!

We have all heard this before, it’s not going to work we know. But maybe changing it to ‘The dog hid my car key, my shoes or my resume’ will work? Are we being realistic or are we just too optimistic here?

See below: Good reason or lame excuse?

Missed a deadline
– I was too busy with study/assignment/exam/work…
– My computer broke down…
– The network was down…
– I wrote down the wrong dates…
FarmVilleCafe WorldRestaurant City– I have been very busy developing my employability skills, I am currently running businesses in Restaurant City, Cafe World, Farmville, it’s not easy to keep up you know…
– I’m late with this application because I haven’t actually looked at your website, and I thought you would appreciate honesty much more than an insincere application.

Turning up late
– It was the traffic…
– I live very far away…
– I wasn’t thinking and accidentally went to my old job…
– I got lost, I couldn’t locate your company, this is my first visit to your office after all…
– My dog hid my only pair of shoes somewhere in the apartment and won’t tell me where they are…

Missing in action!
– I was in such a hurry, I forgot to call you to tell you that I was going to be late…
– I thought of ringing but I couldn’t remember your phone number…
– I thought I have rung someone at work, but maybe I haven’t, oops!
– I have got my dates/days mucked up, thought it’s Sunday today!
– I took the wrong turn off and I ended up at the beach instead…
– I got on the wrong bus and I had no idea where I was…

Lack of knowledge/preparation
– Sorry, but I wasn’t taught any leadership and critical thinking skills at uni…
– Well, I have applied for too many jobs, I have forgotten what this one is about, but I know I really want this job…
– I believe you can find the answer to that question in my CV…
– I know that you are in the retail business, but nothing much beyond that, I’m afraid I can’t offer you any further info.. How about you telling me a bit more about what your company actually does?

Some excuses has been used over and over again by too many candidates, employers are becoming immune to these excuses. The same old trick won’t work all the time. After all, employers are not naive, they can tell when it’s a lame excuse!

Most creative excuses people use when calling in sick

George Washington:It is better to offer no excuse than a bad one.

I suppose if we don’t have a good reason for something that we have messed up, it’s probably better to accept the responsibility, admit the mistake and stop blaming it on ‘the dog’.
