Here’s a true story of someone who has made it through to his first job,
by choice and by chance.

…but not by his grades!

Johnny was having some difficulty in landing a job after his graduation. He has neither appealing grades nor great achievements. He decided to visit the companies that he’s interested in and hand over his CV personally. On one occasion, while he was handing over his CV at the reception counter, the HR Manager passed by and overheard him. The HR Manager invited him to join in for their meetings with clients. During those meetings, Johnny has managed to connect well with the clients and impressed them. Needless to say, he was offered a job by the company in the end (despite the fact that he hasn’t got good grades/achievements).

This kind of story is nothing new, you’ve probably heard something similar. However, it’s a good reminder that sometimes instead of sitting back, admiring other people’s achievement and wondering why you (who are of equal or better quality) are not the chosen one, it’s probably better to spring into action and put yourself in the way of chance.Life is unfair

If Johnny didn’t put himself out there and approach employers directly, he could still be job hunting now. Of course, not everyone gets to have the chance that he has had, but you never know what’s around the corner. One thing’s for sure, if you don’t make the choice of putting yourself out there, you are never going to have the chance that Johnny has had. So, keep an eye out for some great opportunities to put yourself out there: careers expos, seminars, employer presentations, open days
