It’s National Volunteer Week and a time to thank all the volunteers around us. We are lucky to have such kind-hearted, giving and talented people in our communities and we recognise that volunteers make a huge contribution to many New Zealand organisations. Students play their part in volunteering, and in my role managing the Victoria Plus Programme I am privileged to connect with these outstanding individuals. Not only do they help those around them but through the University’s service and leadership programme, they help themselves to develop key employability skills. Feedback from the Victoria Plus Alumni also shows how graduates continue their deep commitment to social responsibility alongside their workplace responsibilities. SallyArts and Law graduate Sally West is one of the latest recipients of the Victoria Plus Award. “I joined the Victoria Plus program during my first year at university, and it has enriched my tertiary experience and fostered an environment of community involvement and personal development.” Her volunteering spanned being a Residents’ Association President to roles in her later years as Class Representative; Faculty Delegate and Volunteer Careers Assistant. She was also a dedicated student leader supporting new students at orientation and with their academic learning. She is one of our many Victoria Plus participants who are certainly making a contribution. Thank you! For more information email
