Professional event is not the same as social event, are you doing it right?

Do’s Don’ts:
  • Background research
  • Prepare an elevator pitch
  • Prepare some questions
  • Honour your RSVP, cancel if you can no longer attend
  • Dress appropriately for the event (first impression counts!)
  • Smile
  • Proper hand shake
  • Introduce yourself
  • Be engaging, show interest
  • Take some notes
  • Ask for contact details
  • Say “Thank you!”
  • Take action/follow up after the event, in a timely fashion (no more than 3 days)
  • Try to “hard sell”
  • Look over someone’s shoulder to scan the room for the next person you want to meet
  • Double dib (dip a food item into a sauce/dip, take a bite and  dip it in the sauce again)
  • Be an attention hog
  • Spend too much time on your phone
  • Only talk to people you already know
  • Demand a meeting
  • Overindulge – too much food or alcohol
  • Ask questions on information already available on the website
  • “Harass” or “stalk” the person if you don’t get a response from your follow up
