As a Career Consultant I am endlessly fascinated by the world of work. What we do to for a living and how we came to do it. The place of work in our lives, whether we work to live or live to work. Whether we enjoy the jobs we do and the ‘what’ and ‘why’ of that. How much of what we like and dislike about a job is about the job or about us. I’m interested in how people find themselves in jobs that bring out their strengths and talents, while others find themselves in jobs that stifle them. The jobs we do in our lives provide opportunities for self-reflection and self-discovery and becomes part of our personal career narrative and career journey.
The Guardian series The Secret Life provides excellent insights into the nitty-gritty of working life. People working in different roles such as tax consulting, oncology, child psychology, teaching, retail management and more, give you their ‘insider view’ of the job. Their stories are anonymous so they have no need to focus on the positive or promote their professions, they can simply give their very personal and very candid perspective.
