The Places You’ll Go

Already we are at the end of the first month of the New Year. Where has the time gone?   Perhaps resolutions made in the first week are already waning as we become embroiled in everyday’ busy-ness’.

Don’t despair if you are already feeling the weight of the future coming down on you. There are five simple, basic principles which if you follow them, will without a doubt successfully strengthen your career development.

Change is constant – accept it and go with it. Be open to change and the new opportunities it can offer you.

Learning is ongoing – the world of work is changing at such a fast pace that learning never stops! Strive for continuous improvement. Keep motivated and stay stimulated by learning new skills and discovering new talents.

Focus on the journey – don’t just look at the destination. Enjoy the experiences along the way and don’t be afraid to swerve off into a new pathway.  Like constant change, your career journey lasts throughout your lifetime.

Know yourself, believe in yourself and follow your heart – identify your top skills and interest areas, your personality type, and let your dreams open up new pathways. The better you know yourself the better you will be able to find an enjoyable, successful and fulfilling life.

Access your allies – Yes! Let your family, friends, mentors, colleagues and peers help and support you through your journey.  We sometimes forget how important they can be to us.  Career success very often comes from a strong team effort.

Here’s to 2017! Enjoy the journey and if you hit some rough patches along the way (inevitable because life is like that!) remember that the Careers Team is always here to help you through.

In the words of Dr. Seuss…..

“Today is your day!
Your mountain is waiting.
So…get on your way!”
(Oh, the Places You’ll Go!)
