Victoria University’s Career and Employment has been named the 2017 Best Careers Service at the New Zealand Association of Graduate Employers (NZAGE) Industry Awards.
The NZAGE is the industry body educating and supporting organisations that currently, or wish to recruit or develop New Zealand graduates. The award goes to the best careers service as rated by member employers in the NZAGE survey.
Pam Thorburn, Director of Student Academic Services, is thrilled that the excellent work of the Careers and Employment team has been recognised at a national level.
“The Careers and Employment team provides our students with multiple opportunities during their time at Victoria to connect with employers, build their networks and to have real workplace experience alongside their studies.”
The team helps students achieve their career goals by offering professional advice on career planning, job exploration and career development.
The team—made up of 12 staff members—works with faculties, local, national and international employers, community organisations and students’ associations to provide opportunities for internships, scholarships and graduate jobs.
The comprehensive range of career-related development opportunities includes:
- career expos
- employer networking evenings
- presentations by employers on career opportunities (74 so far this year)
- one-to-one career counselling sessions
- daily drop-in sessions for CVs and cover letter checks
- the Alumni as Mentors Programme
- the Victoria Plus Programme for service and leadership.
